Card Extra

Protection Racket from Neil Kirby (01/28/2000)

See picture of Protection Racket.

The Ferengi may not be too tough, but they can certainly turn the heat on their opponent. This hidden agenda is just one way of doing so.

Surprising as it may seem, the Ferengi have no trouble finding a person with Treachery (I quickly counted 8 including Bok), and one of these (Gral) has the card as a special download so getting it into play isn't too hard. You don't even have to be present to create a racket, which is a great help. Just being at the same location is good enough, so you can almost carry out drive-by threatening. Move to his location, make your oppponent an offer he shouldn't refuse, and carry on to your destination.

You can threaten a personnel and make a hugely unreasonable request (giving you large sums of money seems to work well, I find). The threatened personnel then forgets their first skill (they must have something on their mind ;-) ) and your opponent has to probe for four turns to see if their personnel dies. A doorway or skill dot are all that's needed and the person has rather less on their mind all of a sudden. Even their short-term amnesia can be useful to deprive your opponent of a critical dilemma passing skill.

Alternatively, threaten a personnel and make a vaguely reasonable request. "Please attempt that nice Wormhole Negotiations or Kahless goes bye-bye". Now your opponent has to decide if you're bluffing, or whether there's a Borg Ship waiting to pounce there, or whether to wait and see if Kahless is good at ducking (and after thousands of years the old boy's getting a bit rheumy), or whether...well, you get the picture.

Other affiliations can also use the Racket as it also works with non-Ferengi personnel with Treachery x2. This includes such morally upright citizens as Hagath, Lore, Ja'Rod, Keevan, and Elim. So almost any affiliation can run a Racket, no matter which quadrant they started from. The possibilities are many and the rewards are valuable, especially if it's your opponent's super-team that gets selected for attention.

Combos:

  • Protection Racket(s) + Treacherous Ferengi + Birta (Special Downloading Hail): Part of the knack to this card is being at the same location as your intended victim. Birta's special download of Hail can stop them in their tracks.
  • Protection Racket + Gral + Quark’s Bar: Report Gral to the Bar, use his special download for the Racket, and then "wander the corridors of DS9" till you find someone suitable at that location to play it on.
  • Protection Racket + your wildest dreams: You aren't going to make a request your opponent will agree to, are you?
