Card Extra Dereth from Evan Lorentz (04/10/2001) |

This exceptionally versatile Vidiian is a true star of the affiliation, complete with a packed skill box. First up, though, is his MEDICAL classification, which of course allows him to report for free using The Vidiian Sodality. A promising beginning - but Dereth also contributes a second personnel type. The rather unusual combination of MEDICAL and ENGINEER on a single personnel helps out with quite a variety of missions and dilemmas. The skills keep coming. Dereth has Navigation - doubled, no less - for passing Navigational Hazards and Gravimetric Distortion (both of which you must contend with even if you're playing with only Voyager cards). He also has both Exobiology and Geology, together a great start on Odo (DS9)'s "Cousin", but just as useful separately on other cards. His attributes are worth noting as well. For a Vidiian, his STRENGTH of 6 is rather high. An 8 CUNNING is respectable as well. And don't knock the 3 INTEGRITY - someone has to get you past In the Pale Moonlight, and he's your man. But the most standout feature Dereth offers is his flexible download. With it, you can get either Organ Theft or a Vidiian Harvester. The two cards go hand in hand as part of the same strategy, of course, but you never know which one you'll want that extra copy of. If you haven't come across a Harvester yet, the choice is easy. If you want to save yourself a seed slot, you can use Dereth to download the Organ Theft instead. But then, if your opponent has accumulated a few STRENGTH enhancements of his own, an extra Harvester would prove quite handy... unless you've already got him beat, in which case the extra 10 points from another copy of Organ Theft is the way to go. The beauty of Dereth (a bit of an oxymoron, I suppose) is you don't have to make that decision in advance - just download the one you want when you need it. Combos:
