Card Extra Handshake from Evan Lorentz (04/06/2001) |

One single incident, three outstanding functions. Handshake is a powerful resource manipulation tool that's worth considering in almost any deck. First up is a card drawing mechanism. If you haven't yet played any other cards on your turn, you can use Handshake for free to force a difficult choice on your opponent: they must discard three cards from their hand, or allow you to draw three. Either choice should work out great for you. Either you get the equivalent of a Kivas Fajo - Collector without actually using up your normal card play, or you knock three cards out of your opponent's hand. Even though he'll choose the three he thinks least valuable at that moment, he might be proven wrong in his assessment just moments later - a lot can change in the course of a turn. The second function of this incident lets you "shake up" your hand before you actually even draw it. You can examine the top five cards of your draw deck and rearrange them in any order you desire - definitely worth the card play if you're planning a crucial probe at the end of your turn. Or, if you've been waiting to draw just the right card, you can check five cards' worth to see if it's there and stack the deck accordingly. Then again, you might choose to shake your opponent's draw deck, keeping something vital out of their reach for a bit longer, or sabotaging one of their probes. The final option on Handshake is another card drawing device, but this one has a higher price tag attached. Your hand must already contain at least three other cards, and you must be willing to give up all of them to discard pile. You're also using your normal card play. The upside, however, is substantial - you get a fresh new hand of seven cards. When you desperately need to get your hands on a certain card, and can't guarantee your opponent will let you draw using Handshake's first function (or that you'll draw what you need in only three cards), you can always try this. Drawing seven cards should give you an excellent chance of finding what you're looking for. And if your old hand wasn't helping you anyway, why not try it? Combos:
