Major Rakal's Romulan Review #64: Flaxian Assassin

Aefvadh! The Romulans may have had a low profile on DS9 for the first few seasons, but it was enough to give us a few good personnel and several other cards to enhance the green guys. One is a dilemma that gives you a bit of extra mileage if you play Romulan...

FLAXIAN ASSASSIN
Dilemma, uncommon, Planet
Unless 2 SECURITY and Biology present, kills one personnel (two if opponent has Tal Shiar in play) with three or more [skill dot] icons (random selection).
"Valued for their professionalism, Flaxian assassins are often employed by the Tal Shiar. Retaya was sent to eliminate Garak using a combinant poison disguised as perfumes."

While a few dilemmas are specifically designed to make life more difficult for a particular affiliation (such as Maman Picard and Punishment Zone), few give such a specific advantage to an affiliation as this one, especially since Scout Encounter is no longer the exclusive province of the Borg and the Romulans. Quite simply, you get the chance to kill two valuable personnel instead of one, provided you have Tal Shiar skill in play - and who wouldn't, if playing Romulan, especially now that you have three to choose from?

Because it targets personnel with three or more skill dots, this dilemma won't bother with cannon fodder; it goes straight for the valuable personnel. Two SECURITY is becoming more common in Away Teams, but not universal, and Biology is one of the less common skills, so you have a good chance of tripping someone up with this odd combination of conditions.

Because they are conditions, the dilemma will "stop" the rest of the Away Team; not only won't they be able to complete the mission this turn, but if you hit one (or two) of the key mission solvers, they may not be completing it for a while yet. Lack of Preparation in front of Flaxian Assassin will eliminate redshirting and make fairly certain that you get someone important.

And note the lack of the important words, "Discard dilemma." This is a wall dilemma - whether it kills anyone or not (that is, even if no one has three or more skill dots), it goes back under the mission if you don't meet its conditions.

The Major's Combos:

  • Hippocratic Oath + Fightin’ Words + Flaxian Assassin: The chances are slim that you will have any Biology left after the two setup dilemmas.
  • Angry Mob + Flaxian Assassin: Or remove a SECURITY instead. Same result.
  • Framed for Murder + Flaxian Assassin: Pick off just the right personnel who could have overcome the Assassin.
