Mot's Useless Card Review #3: Humuhumunukunukuapua'a

urSee prev. 'useless' reviewSee next 'useless' review

Or, if you haven't learned to speak Hawaiian, "that fish." That fish "plays on any location. For this turn: Your personnel with Youth are CUNNING +4 and STRENGTH +4. Opponent's non-aligned personnel are CUNNING -4 and STRENGTH -4."

So what can you do with that fish? Well, you can make the Qualor II Rendezvous mission all but impossible to complete, for starters. By putting dilemmas that require STRENGTH or CUNNING (or both) under this mission, and "fishing" them everytime they send down the non-aligned personnel to attempt it, you guarantee a nasty war of attrition before they'll score any points. Of course, there's no guarantee that your opponent will play this mission, so perhaps something more useful....

Like Anti-Matter Spread. Yes, ANOTHER "useless" card. If your opponent is playing the old "super-ship" strategy (everybody on one ship), then they are bound to have a few non-aligned personnel on board for the ride. Fish the ship, and then attack with an Anti-Matter Spread. After lowering the CUNNING of the N-A personnel on board, they'll likely have more than enough people of CUNNING < 8 aboard to make using the Spread worthwhile. You'll be able to damage their ship (or destroy it if you bring enough weapons), while their retaliatory shot won't even scratch you.

I know it seems like every review, I'm pushing the Colony deck. But this combo is too good to pass up: remember the CIVILIAN Colony of all Soong-Type Androids I suggested defending with a Vulcan Nerve Pinch? You can defend it equally well with that fish. Soong-Type Androids all have Youth, so one fish suddenly boosts their STRENGTH up to 14 each! Ouch! (Add Lower Decks, and now we're talking - gulp! - 16 each!)

And then perhaps the nastiest combo of all for that fish. Vulcan Stone of Gol. All it takes is a good wall dilemma to stop an opponent's Away Team down on a planet. Then you fish the hapless team, play Vulcan Stone of Gol, and watch the non-aligned personnel die! Barring enhancers like Lower Decks, Yellow Alert or Equipment, only Ira Graves, Data’s Body and Lakanta have enough CUNNING to survive the Stone of Gol after being fished. (And only Ishara Yar, Kareen Brianon, Nick Locarno, and the Soong-type Android have Youth.) That leaves close to 3 dozen non-aligned personnel you can fry!

Most importantly, if you are going to play the fish, you have to learn how to pronounce it, so that you can bowl your opponent over double-fold when you use it. They'll be shocked that you're even using it, and they'll be speechless when you effortlessly say:
"I'll play HOO-moo-hoo-moo-noo-koo-noo-koo-uh-poo-uh'ah"
(The apostrophe represents a glottal stop, that sort of sticking, "non-sound" you make in the middle of "uh-oh.")
